Programme: Sappi Project Grow and Land Reform Projects

Programme Description

Encouraging entry into the industry and helping to develop tree farmers consolidates the industry and aligns with the South African governments focus on rural development. In addition to Sappi’s Project Grow model, Sappi is currently assisting several land reform beneficiaries (communities) with the management of their plantations, and has signed Supply Agreements with 34 land reform/restitution projects totalling 4,710ha planted. 
 
With regard to funding, Sappi helps in compiling business plans for these projects and also assists in submitting these business plans to Government to secure Recapitalisation and Development Funding. 
 
Training material in forestry management has been developed by Sappi in association with the South African Institute of Entrepreneurship (SAIE) to help with the management of these projects.
 
Sappi buys the timber once harvested
  

Target Market

Land reform beneficiaries including communities in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Application Conditions

The farmers should be aware that from planting to harvesting the trees take up to 8 years to mature.
 

Success Stories
 
The Sappi project has grown from three growers, farming eight hectares in 1983 to more than 5,065 growers farming just over 22,300ha. Now employing approximately 1,750 people directly and an additional 1,700 indirect rural jobs through the allied 100 SMMEs which have been established.
