Programme Description
 
The Box Shop SA is a lifestyle retail initiative founded with a primary objective of solving access to market problems faced by Small to Medium Enterprises. The Box Shop SA offers a platform for young entrepreneurs to grow their businesses by providing them with funds and space to sell their merchandise, reaching markets beyond their social influence and positioning themselves in global markets. The purpose of this initiative is increase youth participation and contribute to the development of an  inclusive South African Economy, and to increase the number of jobs and business opportunities for youth in urban/peri-urban communities. To improve the sustainability and competitiveness of young entrepreneurs in township economies by providing business development support services and linking young entrepreneurs to markets.

Application Process

Applicants must pitch their ideas to the Box Shop to win support for their products.

 
Success Stories
 
  1. Velaphi Mpolweni, 49, started making his own home furnishing items from his small Johannesburg home in 2013. He now employs four men, supplies stock to the US, and makes R670,000 a year after being picked up by this initiative.
  2. Mandisa Zwane used to make just three African print accessories every month. Thanks to Box Shop’s investment, she could increase her stock production to 60 pieces a month and build a four-person team to help her with orders from places like Atlanta and London.
  3. Eighty entrepreneurs are now registered with the store in Soweto, which opened in 2016. At the last count, they are making approximately R100 000 in sales per month, providing life-changing income for these ambitious designers.
